In line with the conclusions of the Declaration on Commitment to the Transformation of Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, adopted in June 2022, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in collaboration with UNESCO, UNICEF, and the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized a meeting today at the level of education ministers.

The purpose of the meeting was to present a new joint initiative aimed at supporting the practical implementation of commitments from the aforementioned Declaration, as well as identifying priorities in the field of education in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the next ten years.

As part of the initiative, an Action Plan for Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina should be developed, encompassing all levels of education, including preschool, primary, secondary, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and addressing aspects of lifelong learning and higher education. Short-term, medium-term, and long-term priorities focused on investment and improving the quality of education in Bosnia and Herzegovina should be defined.

Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dubravka Bošnjak, emphasized in her address that the priorities from the joint Declaration must be translated into concrete activities and investments at all levels of education. “Our educational systems, along with students, parents, and teaching staff, need to feel tangible benefits in terms of creating higher quality, more inclusive, flexible, and transformative educational environments,” said Minister Bošnjak.

Resident Coordinator of the UN in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ingrid Macdonald, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the efforts undertaken to enhance the quality of education in the country, highlighting that the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina can rely on continuous support in implementing the commitments and conclusions of the Summit on Education Transformation.

During the meeting, a framework for developing an Action Plan for Education was presented, and the attendees acknowledged the importance of this initiative. In the upcoming period, preparatory activities will be conducted for the development of the Action Plan, scheduled for completion in 2024. The activity will be financed by the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, while UNESCO and UNICEF will provide expert and technical support in its implementation, in collaboration with the OSCE Mission and the Council of Europe in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
