Minister of Civil Affairs Dubravka Bošnjak and German Ambassador Thomas Fitchen visited mine-contaminated areas in the Majevica region. Alongside the minister and ambassador, German military attaché Franz Josef Nolte, director of the BH Mine Action Centre (BH MAC) Enis Horozović, representatives of international organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina - Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), representatives of the OSCE, municipal leaders from Majevica, and others involved in the demining process in the Majevica region were present.

This project, funded by the Federal Republic of Germany with an amount of 9.7 million euros, aims to demine a total area of 27.88 square kilometres. It includes five municipalities in the Majevica region, two from the Republika Srpska and three from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving as a good example of inter-municipal and inter-entity cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The project, which started in July 2022 and is set to continue until the end of 2024, plans to clear the area of mines between Semberija, Posavina, and the Tuzla basin.

Minister Bošnjak expressed her gratitude to the donors and all the brave participants in this project for their dedicated energy and support.

"The Majevica Project, like many other demining projects, is not just about removing mines but investing in the future of our country, peace, stability, and prosperity," Minister Bošnjak emphasized.

Highlighting Germany's long-standing role in demining in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Fitschen emphasized the importance of this project in terms of reconciliation and creating a safe environment for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Over 100 people from BHMAC, MAG, and NPA are currently working on the Majevica project, presenting the achieved results and outlining the remaining activities to make the Majevica region mine-free by 2024.

This project has far-reaching consequences not only for the safety of citizens but also for the economic and tourism development in the region, the restoration of homes, agricultural assets, and the landscape. Demining represents a crucial phase in the reconstruction, creating conditions for sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue, in collaboration with domestic and international partners, to work diligently in the field of demining to ensure a safe environment and prosperous development in all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
