Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully fulfilled its obligation to remove cluster munitions by 1 September 2023, as stipulated by the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) prohibits all use, stockpiling, production and transfer of cluster munitions ratified in 2010. This is a significant step forward for Bosnia and Herzegovina and a testament to its commitment to the global effort to eliminate cluster munitions.

As stated at the event in Sarajevo where this achievement was presented, all tasks related to the cluster munition clearance operations were executed according to the planned timelines, resulting in the discovery and destruction of a total of 7,932 pieces of cluster munitions.

During the wartime conflicts, Bosnia and Herzegovina was contaminated with this destructive ordnance at a total of 140 locations, covering an area of 14.61 km2. Cluster munitions claimed the lives of 195 individuals and left lasting repercussions on the community.

Representatives from the Mine Action Centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH MAC) and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Commission emphasized that this significant success would not have been possible without the cooperation and support of various institutions and organizations, foremost among them being the Norwegian People's Aid, the Civil Protection Administration of theRepublika Srpska, the Federal Civil Protection Administration of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and many others. Special gratitude was extended to the Government and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Bosnia and Herzegovina for their crucial support in implementing cluster munition removal projects at over 79 different locations in our country.

Although the cluster munition removal process has been completed, the Ministry of Civil Affairs will continue to collaborate with domestic institutions and international partners to combat the remaining explosive remnants of war, with the goal of fulfilling obligations related to de-mining by 2027.
