At today's 12th session of the Committee for the Preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in South Korea, the decision was adopted on inscription of Konjic woodcarving on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

"The inscription of Konjic woodcarving on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is of great importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina and as such encourages further activities to preserve the rich intangible cultural heritage of our country and shows our strong commitment to the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage "said Minister of Civil Affairs Adil Osmanović.

Woodcarving is an artistic craft with a long tradition in the municipality of Konjic.  The woodcarvings - including furniture, sophisticated interiors and small decorative items - stand out with their recognizable hand-carved motifs and overall visual identity. Carving is an integral part of the local community culture, a measure of beauty and a benefit of home interiors, and a tradition that creates a sense of community and belonging. It is also an economically viable, socially inclusive and ecologically sustainable craft that deals with by different ethnic groups, and serves as an instrument of dialogue and co-operation. The craft is widespread among the citizens of Konjic, and owners of family carpentry workshops are the ones most responsible for preserving these elements, training students on woodworking and promoting this craft.

The process of nomination of Konjic woodcarving started in 2014, in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports and the local community in Konjic, which is bearer of tradition of this element.

Konjic woodcarving is the second element of the intangible heritage from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which, after the Zmijanjski vez, is included in the Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
